By portraying his identity through the other characters, Reynolds dives into the idea that justice and revenge are one in the same thing. First, he allows Will to think that killing someone is the right thing to do, allowing justice and revenge to be confused with each other, Another thing about the rules. They werent meant to be broken (35). The author writes the book as if there is a continuous cycle. Someone dies, someone else gets killed, and so on. The Rules are the main reason for this cycle, and this path has been going on for a long time. To the community, The Rules are justice and are morally correct. From an outside view of the community, The Rules are perceived to be solely based upon revenge, for losing a loved one. While many believe that in the past they have pursued justice, Will, with the help of his dead family and friends, comes to the realization that he was on the path to pursue revenge. This i s when the true separation between justice and revenge take form. Reynolds portrays Wills motives as justice, but as the elevator ride continues on, it turns into being perceived as revenge, I felt like crying, which felt like another person trapped behind my face, tiny fists punching the back of my eyes, feet kicking my throat at the spot where the swallow starts. Stay put, I whispered to him. Stay strong, I whispered to me. Because crying is against The Rules (30). The only thing that Will has ever known is The Rules; no crying, no snitching, and always get revenge. When something bad actually happens to Will, he understands the struggle that people have with following the rules. Will thinks that he is pursuing justice, but he is actually pursuing revenge. Justice and revenge are two different things. Justice is something that is for the good of the community or area, while revenge is focused upon yourself. Will thinks that he is pursuing justice because he is taught nothing else. He taught to always follow The Rules and this rule is a prime example of that, NO.3: Revenge. If someone you love gets killed, find the person who killed them, and kill them (33). When Will is taught this, he thinks that this is the only way to live life, to always follow The Rules. In the title of rule number three, the word revenge is present, yet everyone thinks that following the rules is what is right. Justice, by definition, is the concept of moral rightness based on ethics, rationality, law, natural law, religion, or equity. In simple terms, it is the act of being just and/or fair (https://crimesurvivors.org/what-does-justice-mean-to-you/). Natural law, in this case, is The R ules. In the pursuit of justice, Will comes to the realization that killing someone, is not just. It is morally and ethically incorrect. He realizes something that he has always known since he was introduced to The Rules. Will understands that what many thinks to be justice, is actually revenge.

Future generations will be affected the most. People who do not even exist will have to pay for what we, all people, have done to this earth. To begin to make changes, one must realize the severity of the issue. Locke Vs. Marx Essay, Research Paper For many political theoreticians and minds, the thoughts of labour and belongings are cardinal to the development of authoritiess or provinces, and henceforth, really of import facets of human life. For some authors, the development of belongings is a direct consequence of labour, and authorities is set up to guarantee the belongings rights of those who own belongings. Some position belongings and labour basically or of course connected facets of human life, while others see it as simply a societal convention. Each mind besides has different sentiments about how belongings is acquired, every bit good as what the bounds to belongings acquisition are. While one author may supply the most just history of belongings, another may supply a more executable history of belongings acquisition and its bounds. This essay will try to compare and contrast the beliefs of John Locke and Karl Marx on the thoughts of labour and belongings with their connexions to the facets of the human status, every bit good as determine who holds the most executable or just history of belongings. We will write a custom essay sample on Locke Vs Marx Essay Research Paper For or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page To get down, Locke believes that belongings is non a # 8220 ; thing # 8221 ; , instead, it is a relationship between an person and an point. Property is a natural status in John Locke s province of nature, intending it was present since the beginning. # 8220 ; Thus labour, in the beginning, gave a right of belongings, wherever anyone was pleased to use it upon what was common, which remained a long while the far greater portion, and is yet more than world makes usage of. # 8221 ; ( Locke, 27 ) . In order for belongings rights to be, they must be recognized by other persons through the act of blending physical labour with nature. The most cardinal and natural signifiers of the belongings of adult male are # 8220 ; The labour of his organic structure, and the work of his custodies # 8221 ; ( Locke, 19. ) These cardinal belongingss, harmonizing to Locke, can non be stripped from any adult male # 8221 ; nor could without hurts take from him. # 8221 ; ( Locke, 21 ) . By blending n ature with this cardinal signifier of belongings, or labour, adult male can allow belongings to himself. # 8220 ; His labour hath taken it out of the custodies of nature, where it was common, and belonged every bit to all her kids, and hath hereby appropriated it to himself # 8221 ; ( Locke, 20 ) . Here, Locke explains that by blending one s physical labour with, for illustration, an apple from a tree, one removes the apple from the common cache of apples in the tree, and the apple becomes his ain personal belongings. Locke believes that the jurisprudence of nature besides sets bounds for belongings acquisition. # 8220 ; The same jurisprudence of nature that does by this means give us belongings, does besides jump that belongings too. # 8221 ; ( Locke, 20 ) . Harmonizing to Locke, there are three bounds to how much belongings one can get. First, trades with taking so many points, that they spoil from being hoarded and non used. # 8220 ; Nothing was made by God for adult male to botch or destroy. # 8221 ; ( Locke, 21 ) . The 2nd says that one should non be a gourmand and leave an copiousness for others to take from when one acquires their belongings. The 3rd and concluding bound says that one should merely take merely every bit much as you yourself can utilize or better upon. If any of these bounds are exceeded, the productiveness of everyone suffers. However, the innovation of money, harmonizing to Locke, can trump these three bounds. This is because goods will non botch since they can be sold , and workers can be hired for pay labour to roll up more goods than any one individual entirely could. Equally good as coll ecting goods and picking fruit, adult male could besides blend his labour with land in order to claim that land as his belongings. â€Å"As much land as a adult male tills, workss, improves, cultivates, and can utilize the merchandise of, so much is his property† ( Locke, 21 ) . Since blending labour with nature is how Locke perceives the acquisition of belongings, it follows so that labour and belongings are basically and of course connected to the facets of human life. â€Å"Locke himself states† And therefore, I think, it is really easy to gestate, without any trouble, how labour could at first get down a rubric of belongings in the common things of nature, and how the disbursement it upon our utilizations bounded it.† ( Locke, 30 ) . Lock says here that labour can be assorted with nature and create rubrics of belongings that are every bit natural as the labour used itself. Marx examines these issues in a more economical sense, concentrating on markets and forces of production instead than natural belongings rights in Locke s province of nature. Forces of production such as labour, land and engineering, every bit good as dealingss of production, or the division of labour and belongings rights, are cardinal to the scrutiny of Marx. Marx focuses on the Feudalistic epoch and does non believe in the Lockean province of nature. In order for Marx s markets to work, one needs goods to be able to merchandise or exchange. Harmonizing to Marx, if you don Ts have goods, you can sell or merchandise your labour or services. Labor is a basic signifier of belongings for Marx, much like Locke. Besides like Locke in some facets, belongings roots from externalized labour, which is the procedure of tuging in order to make an object exterior of yourself. Labor is a originative procedure for Marx, and externalisation is doing a trade or art signifier, which can be a signifi er of self look. Unlike Locke, this labour is a originative procedure, non tilling land or picking apples, hence, the acquisition of belongings is different. If you pick an apple from a tree, it is non needfully your apple, but if you weave a basket, no 1 can postulate that it is your personal belongings. In a capitalist market system, you can merely merchandise goods if you own them. Marx s reproduction of labour provinces that one must prolong their labour through basic human necessities, such as nutrient and shelter, which are understood as goods or belongings. To Marx, belongings is non a natural or cardinal facet of human being. In a capitalist economic system, belongings comes about through certain societal dealingss between the capitalist and labourer. It is a societal convention to Marx, and is non natural at all, in fact one of Marx s chief motions into communism abolishes all belongings rights. One ground Marx would wish to travel from our current authoritiess into communism is because of the disaffection of labour. Alienation of labour alienates the physical labourer from the object he creates. The capitalist owns the merchandise that the labourer produces through the division of labour, and no single worker will of all time have what he creates in this system. Marx does non truly dig on the development of belongings rights or belongings dealingss, he is more concerned with economic factors of production and markets. In Marx s base superstructure theoretical account of a political economic system, the forces of production ( labour, engineering ) form the base of the political system. After the forces of production, come the dealingss of production, which are category inequality, belongings rights and the division of labour. 323

Scotch Irish Immigration essays

Scotch Irish Immigration essays Immigration into America has shaped and molded us into who we are today. Without groups such as the Scotch-Irish, English, Dutch, etc. America would not be the great melting pot that it has now become. Each of these cultures brought with them a sense of religion, culture and spirit. They took a chance to better themselves, leaving everything that was remotely comfortable in their life behind, bringing with One such group is the Scotch-Irish. The Scotch-Irish history begins with the Scots in the 1600s. By the end of 1600, Europe was at the end of the Renaissance, but Scotland had not taken part in the resurgence of learning and culture. It was still a primitive, wild country, one of the poorest in Europe. Poor soil and backward farming methods, frequent border wars with England, and the wildness of the isolated Highlanders had all contributed to Scotlands slow The colonization of Ulster began in the 17th Century. British monarchs had been trying unsuccessfully for hundreds of years to subdue Ireland, but it was not until 1603 that the Ulster Irish finally surrendered to the Englishman, Lord Mountjoy. In 1609, James I informed the Scots that they could participate in this colonization of Ulster. Many Scotsmen felt they could overcome their poverty and the fact that the landlords in Ireland were more willing to extend longer leases to farmers than the landlords in Scotland were willing to do (Leyburn). In 1717, the Great Migration commenced. The term Scotch-Irish originated in the mid-eighteenth century in America to distinguish the Ulster Presbyterian emigrants of Scottish ancestry from other Irish settlers in the colonies. It has been asserted that during that time frame approximately one-third the Presbyterian population of Ireland migrated to British North America (Jackson 61-62). Change-oriented leadership trans formational and charismatic leaders Coursework - 1

Change-oriented leadership trans formational and charismatic leaders slp - Coursework Example In my opinion, this approach was more managerial in nature, as the supervisor conformed to previously set standards and sought to maintain the status quo. The supervisor did little to set new directions or establish new goals, as is the case for leaders who are more visionary-oriented. The Five Factor Model (FFM) outlines five personality dimensions, which include Neurotism, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Extraversion and Openness (OCEAN). Within each dimension are primary factors, which describe in detail individual qualities. Conscientiousness refers to an individual’s ability to be dependable and involved whereas agreeableness analyzes the degree to which one co-operates with others and their level of compassion. Conversely, extraversion encompasses one’s ability to interact socially with others whereas neurotism measures the degree of emotions instability such as an increased predisposition towards negative emptions such as anger or anxiety. Finally, openness to experience encompasses an individual’s curiosity level, love for adventure and ability to appreciate aesthetics. My supervisor was low in neurotism, high in extraversion, high in conscientiousness, low in agreeableness, and low in openness to experience. As the head on the inter nship program, he had developed a high tolerance from training interns. His subordinates could depend on him when faced with challenging issues and he had a good rapport with them, as he was a social person. However, from his plain office dà ©cor, it was clear that he had no appreciation of aesthetics; for example, art. The behavioral approach adopted by the supervisor was task-oriented. The company’s core task was customer satisfaction, which necessitated employees to establish a good rapport with the clients. As such, performance appraisals sought to evaluate an employee’s interactions with the clients based on the client’s feedback. The training seminars organized by the

To what extent should we make moral judgments about cultural practices Essay

To what extent should we make moral judgments about cultural practices from outside our own culture - Essay Example Those who recommend this hold that the world is sharply divided into separate societies, sealed units, each with its own system of thought. They feel that the respect and tolerance due from one system to another forbids us ever to take up a critical position to any other culture." (Midgley, 69) According to this perspective, moral judgment is a kind of coinage valid only in its country of origin and the author terms this position ass 'moral isolationism'. Midgley also maintains that it is not forced upon individuals, and indeed makes no sense at all, to make moral judgment about other cultures. Unlike the general thinking that such an attempt to make moral judgment about other cultures is a respectful attitude to other cultures, the author purports that one cannot respect what is entirely unintelligible to one and therefore it is not respectful attitude. Here, the author comes up with her central argument of the article and there is every reason to realize it as true and rational. As the author argues, it is essential for one to know enough about another person or culture in order to come up with an evenhanded judgment about the culture or person. Therefore, Mary Midgley makes some essential arguments concerning moral judgment of other cultures in her article "On Trying out One's New Sword" and a reflective analysis of the article helps us in determining to what extent we should make moral judgments about cultural practices from outside our own culture. The article "On Trying out One's New Sword" suggests a moral isolationism which lays down a general ban on moral reasoning with regard to making moral judgments about strange cultures. In order to establish her argument, the author makes use of some remote example from the classical Japanese with a verb which means 'to try out one's new sword on a chance wayfarer'. According to this example, the Samurai is required to try out this new sword on any wayfarer who was not another Samurai, and this action could injure his honor, offend his ancestors, and even let down his emperor. "Now when we hear of a custom like this, we may well reflect that we do not understand it; and therefore are not qualified to criticize it at all, because we are not members of that culture. But we are not members of any other culture either, except our own. So we extend the principle to cover all extraneous cultures, and we seem therefore to be moral isolationists." (Midgley, 70) Midgley also deals with certain fundamental questions about moral isolationism with reference to making moral judgments about strange cultures. First of all, she examines whether the isolating barrier work both ways or people in other cultures are equally unable to criticize others. According to her, outsiders can deliver perfectly good indictments, although it makes more than two weeks to make them demining. "Intelligent outsiders can progress in it, and in some ways will be at an advantage over the locals. But, if this is so, it must clearly apply to ourselves as much as anybody else." (Midgley, 70) The author also deals with the question whether the isolating barrier between cultures block praise as well as blame. It is important to make immaculate judgments about other
